PCB Design Review Checklist: What to Check Before Sending Your Files for Manufacturing

A PCB design might look finished in your CAD tool, but that doesn't always mean it's ready for manufacturing. Before a board goes into fabrication or assembly, every detail needs a final review, from Gerber files and drill data to solder mask settings, silkscreen markings, BOM accuracy, and mechanical specifications.

Even a minor inconsistency can trigger manufacturing queries, delay production, or lead to redesign. In some cases, it results in a complete board respin. That's why experienced teams follow a structured PCB design review process before releasing files for production.

Why a PCB Design Review Matters

Most manufacturing issues don't stem from major design flaws. More often, they come from small oversights that are easy to miss during development.

A drill file might not align with the Gerber data. The board outline could be missing from the mechanical layer. Plated and non-plated holes might not be clearly defined. Solder mask openings may fall outside fabrication limits. Even something as simple as a footprint mismatch between the BOM and PCB layout can create assembly problems.

These mistakes are common, but they're also easy to prevent with a thorough pre-submission review.

Start with the Manufacturing Files

Your manufacturing package is the foundation of a successful build. Before sending files to your PCB manufacturer, confirm that all required outputs are present and exported correctly in your data package (Gerber files).

This typically includes:

  • Copper layers
  • Solder mask layers
  • Silkscreen layers
  • Paste layers
  • NC drill files
  • Board outline or mechanical layer

Take a few minutes to inspect the files in a Gerber viewer. This simple step often reveals missing layers, alignment issues, mirrored text, incorrect scaling, or export errors before they reach the manufacturer.

Catching these issues early saves time for everyone involved.

Review Key Manufacturability Parameters

Once the file package is verified, focus on the design parameters that directly impact fabrication.

Check trace widths and spacing against the capabilities of your selected manufacturer and the copper thickness specified in the design. Review drill sizes, annular rings, and drill-to-pad alignment, especially in dense layouts and multilayer boards.

Pay close attention to copper placement near the board edge. Unless edge plating is intentionally required and clearly documented, copper should maintain adequate clearance from the outline. It's also worth checking for copper slivers, narrow plane gaps, and incomplete polygon pours that may create manufacturing challenges.

Solder mask and silkscreen deserve the same level of attention. Verify mask openings, mask dams, and clearances around exposed copper. For silkscreen, ensure reference designators remain readable and don't overlap pads, vias, or exposed metal surfaces.

Don't Overlook BOM and Footprint Validation

A clean PCB layout doesn't guarantee a smooth assembly process. Component data must be reviewed with equal care.

Every BOM entry should include the correct reference designator, quantity, package type, manufacturer part number, and component description. The package specified in the BOM must match the footprint used on the PCB.

For example, an 0402 resistor listed in the BOM should not be assigned to a 0603 footprint in the layout.

It's also important to verify polarity indicators, pin-1 markings, thermal pads on QFN packages, BGA footprints, and other fine-pitch components. These checks take only a few minutes but help prevent assembly errors that are far more expensive to fix later.

Perform a Final Submission Review

Before packaging and uploading your design files, perform one final review of the complete release package.

Confirm that all required documents are included:

  • Gerber files
  • Drill files
  • Mechanical drawings
  • PCB stack-up information
  • Bill of Materials (BOM)
  • Pick-and-place files
  • Assembly notes and special instructions

If the design includes special requirements such as carbon printing, peel-off mask, via filling, countersunk holes, controlled impedance, or panelization instructions, make sure those details are clearly documented in the mechanical drawing or accompanying readme file.

Yes — and this is the most common misconception. DRC checks your design against your own rule set, which is usually a subset of what the manufacturer actually needs. A clean DRC is a good start, not a finish line.
